Macbeth (Act 1)
From the very first act we get to see the witches being introduced- even before main character Macbeth is. Out of all of Shakespeare’s literature, I have only read Romeo and Juliet (which I very truthfully liked) towards my freshman year of high school. As it was so long ago, I don’t remember there being a supernatural aspect to it- in fact, I’m pretty sure there wasn’t or else I would remember it. This is why Macbeth caught my interest so easily; it’s not every day that you get to read a text with subtle supernatural occurrences/themes in it. I also had no idea that Shakespeare was one to write anything about the supernatural, so starting up Macbeth made it a huge (and pleasant) surprise for me). In my opinion, witches are also the most underused/underrated form of the supernatural used in books, movies, television, etc. Usually there’s focuses of werewolves, vampires, even angels and demons- yet witches are hardly ever used. To see such an old text such as Macbeth include witches in it is honestly so pleasing to see and read. The witches play a very important role to this play, as they are capable of predicting future occurrences in the play prior to any of the characters. Another reason why they are so important is because they play a very huge role in Macbeth’s life throughout the play, as they are the forces that in a way ‘guide’ him into making certain actions.
